HANDS ON LEARNING, UNDER THE OPEN SKY
Roots Norfolk - Jess King
TUTOR - EYFS, KS1-KS3, TEFL/TESOL

My name is Jess, and I offer tuition from ages 4-14 in core subjects - Maths, English and Science.
I also offer TESOL / TEFL tuition to both adults and children (CELTA qualified).
I am an experienced primary educator and for the last 10 years as a Forest School Leader, have discovered the benefits of hands on learning, under the open sky.
Let's explore, learn and grow outside together!

Concentration in the classroom a challenge?
Wonder if learning in the wild, not in the walls, helps focus?
It does!
Nature exposure improves cognitive performance - connecting with nature helps reach educational aims.
My outdoor tutoring sessions help children light their learning spark again using a purposeful, kinaesthetic approach to accessing the curriculum. The sessions are suitable for children who are in need of some inspiration, focus and self esteem building, such as those with/in:
-alternative provision
-home education
-ADHD
-Autism
-SEMH
I tailor sessions to individual learning needs - meeting your personal needs whilst also applying experience and knowledge of National Curriculum requirements / IELTS exam requirements - in order to work towards academic goals.
Learning outside significantly helps focus by reducing mental fatigue, lowering stress, and increasing engagement through multisensory experiences, leading to better attention and cognitive performance, with studies showing fewer redirections needed and improved academic outcomes for those spending time in nature.
Nature provides a mental reset, allowing for longer periods of sustained concentration and making learning more meaningful and memorable through hands-on, real-world application, even boosting neurotransmitters linked to focus like dopamine.
In essence, outdoor learning capitalises on nature's restorative properties and dynamic environments to improve focus, engagement, and overall cognitive and emotional well-being.

BENEFITS OF LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
Why Outdoor Learning Boosts Focus
-
Reduces Mental Fatigue: Natural settings offer a break from demanding indoor environments, allowing minds to rest and reset, improving attention spans.
-
Lowers Stress & Anxiety: Being in nature decreases cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and promotes feelings of calm, creating a better state for learning.
-
Increases Engagement: The varied sensory input (sights, sounds, textures) and active, real-world tasks (like building or observing) make lessons more captivating and memorable.
-
Enhances Cognitive Function: Fresh air and movement increase oxygen and blood flow to the brain, boosting serotonin and dopamine, which are vital for mood and focus.
-
Supports ADHD & Attention: Children with attention difficulties often show improved focus and fewer signs of restlessness in outdoor settings, with some studies finding better performance on attention tests outdoors.
How It Works in Practice
-
Hands-On Activities: Building shelters, exploring life cycles, or nature scavenger hunts require sustained focus and practical problem-solving, strengthening concentration skills.
-
Meaningful Context: Applying classroom concepts to real-world nature makes learning stick and becomes more relevant, increasing intrinsic motivation.
-
Breaks Down Tasks: Lessons can be broken into manageable, active chunks, leading to longer periods of focused engagement than in traditional settings.
